Welcome Baby Shayona

Baby Shayona came into this world today. She shares her birthday with Mommy Mausami. She's very cute and cuddly. Daddy Gunjan is so protective and caring too. Looking forward to sharing many precious moments with Shayona in the coming days.

Call it a Mom's intuition

So we decided we'll announce the baby news to our closest friends on our 5th anniv party day, 5th Jan. Then we realized Mausami was due on the 25th and would deliver any day now. We'll miss her from the party. So I decided to go over for a special chit chat with her, you know, just tell her, leave Gunjan in the dark and tell him on the 5th.

When I went over to their place, Gunjan, Mausami and her mom were all talking to me, in the family room. I talked to them for like 5-10 mins, but there were no signs that mom and Gunjan would leave me alone with Mausami.

Finally I tried to be discrete and said to Mausami "hey can I talk to you alone?" That alone was enough for Mausami to guess it :-) She goes "Congratulations Mamata"... ha ha ha ... they called Amit and congratulated him on phone, for a "good job" ... he he he ...

Almost spilt the beans

The scene was a Christmas dinner potluck party at Amit's colleague's house. Everyone is drinking wine or something else. A certain someone from Amit's office notices the usual wine glass from my hand has been replaced by apricot juice. I was totally unprepared for this :-) I just brushed off the question, feebly attempting to offer the excuse that Amit had me memorize: I'm on medication for my knee, and it doesn't allow me to drink alcohol.

To ski or not to ski

... that was the question. We went for a 3 day trip to Tahoe, with Vidyut and Sarika. Amit was planning to ski on Sunday, 23rd December. Numerous times during the week he'd ask me "Will you ski with me?" And I'd go... "I don't think I should." Even the nurse practitioner at the first ob/gyn visit told me to stay away from downhill skiing. My personal trainer too said "Try cross-country skiing for a change, avoid downhill skiing, your knee is still recovering and you're pregnant."

As the knee showed signs of pain late Saturday night (we had to ice it), we decided it is best if I don't ski on Sunday. The plan was Vidyut and Sarika would go snow-shoeing, and Amit would take intermediate ski school early in the day, 10am, and perhaps around noon I can go do some tubing with Vidyut and Sarika. Until then, I had my wonderful Sudoku book to give me company in the cafe that smelled of hot chocolate - awesome!

Turns out V & S got into trouble with snow shoes - they were given ski boots instead. After a lot of hassle and an hour spent trying to get poles and snow shoes, those poor souls were very exhausted, and it was 11am already. They gave up on the next adventure - tubing. I thought to myself, I can't sit here in the cafe all day solving Sudokus. Let me go do some tubing on my own.

The tubing slope at Sierra-at-Tahoe was very boring, just go up and come down in a straight line. My attention was side-tracked as I began noticing the numerous skiers coming down on the hill in front of me. I was really tempted. As luck would have it, I spotted Amit coming down at 11:30am. I almost begged to him "I so want to ski... Can I please, pretty please?!" He replied with a big knowing smile on his face "Go get dressed and meet me here at 12:30" :-) Wow, I was in seventh heaven!

The rest is history. I got into the equipment at full day price, took almost 45mins to get fully dressed, got the half day lift ticket and was on my post at 12:25 :-) sharp! Met Amit a few mins after that, and he took me up on the lifts. I had 5 great ski runs that day, all green. I debated quitting after lunch, but went back for one more long run. The run called Sugar n Spice is almost 2.6mi long, and its pretty good and has nice variations - turns, steep parts, and the easy ones too. I didn't have even a single fall, and I think Amit was pretty happy about the fact that I skied with him! Totally loved the day :-)

Yes yes, please keep this a secret from the parents. Else there will be no end to hearing about it from them. And yes, we both are certain now, it's going to be a skier baby, going to make sure it hits the slopes at 2.5yrs :-)

The first ultrasound

So today was my first official ob/gyn visit, scheduled with a nurse practitioner. We had a huge list of questions, so I think we kind of over-ran our scheduled 45min session time :D We weren't too impressed with the NP's knowledge or her answers, we thought she could have done so much better. Also due to the delay, she literally ran through the list of first trimester screening and diagnostic tests.

Anyways, we got a first peek at the little angel :-) It was so small, with a blip blip blip blip small dot flickering away to glory... the heart of my little one! Thankfully we could actually see it, no Rachel moments here. It somehow didn't feel that much of an "oh, wow!!" moment then, as it feels now :-)

Then came the ugh part - the pap smear. Why can't they be gentle, I have no clue! The urine and blood tests were next. The whole thing ate up almost 2.5hrs, Amit's day was shot after that. Since we carpooled, he came over to my office and worked from our cafe. That was super cute :-)

Oh yes, we got a first pic of the ultrasound...

She totally guessed it...

I have this weird thing in my first trimester (at least I hope it goes away after the first trimester!) that I feel really cold. Body temperature is elevated by a degree or so. As a result, I'm feeling colder ... brr... than most people around me :-)

I mentioned being cold to my office mate, who seemed to think it was warm, even borderline hot! 3-4 days of this "oh, it's so cold", "no way, it's so hot in here" must have gotten her wheels spinning!

Today she finally asked me "Are you pregnant?" And I replied with an emphatic "NO!" After turning around and typing a few things (or was it pretending to type?!), I just couldn't sit straight, lying to my office mate like that, so I coughed up a confession. She was soooooo excited, she closed the door and screeeeeamed :D

We told our close family

Results from the blood test came in today evening, and so we made the calls today on our way back from the Audi drive event.

Swati was lucky she was the closest to a sane timezone we could call :-) We asked her to "guess" and she was so apprehensive :-) She was like ... no, I don't want to guess, u tell me! Finally we told her. She was very happy and still couldn't believe it was already happening!

My mom was next. Amit asked her "Mom, did you unpack your bags already? I think we need you back here!" What followed next was just crazy. I could literally see her jumping around, she just couldn't contain herself. The fact that it happened while she was here was picked her curiosity the most. If we'd only found out before she left (13 Nov), she would have stayed for a while longer.

Amit's parents were next. We broke the news by telling Puppa that we'd pre-ordered his bday gift and it usually takes 9 months to be ready :-) Oh man, was he delighted! Mumma was very happy too. Everything was happening at the right time. Mumma being the absolute darling that she is, advised me to take it easy, no jumping around, no this, no that :-)

Dad was in Pune, so called him later at night. We asked him to "guess" the news, and he guessed it as "Am I going to be a grandfather?" Our positive response blew him away :-) He talked to us for 5 mins inspite of being in a meeting.

Finally got thru to Mandaar the next day morning and told him the big news! He was all ears, and kept saying "I am coming there to see the baby" ... yes, we will plan things out, lil' bro.

I was dying to tell her...

Close buddy @ work & confidante. I sooooo wanted to tell her. I just started asking her loads of questions: her doctor, her hospital, pre-natal tests, vitamins, etc. Finally I couldn't keep it a secret any more. I told her :-)

And so it happened...

4th Nov '07, just another Saturday night. It was one of our best times together. We knew we were in the "danger zone", but kinda-sorta just went for it ;-)

I didn't admit to myself about my missed period even though I was 4 days late. We were about to visit Kings Canyon & Sequoia NP for the Thanksgiving '07 holidays, a break we both desperately needed. There are no words to describe my feelings on those 2 nights in the park. I "knew" I was pregnant, but I wasn't sure how Amit would react if I told him then. I also wanted to be 100% sure with a pregnancy test. Sleep was hard to come. If I did fall asleep, I'd wake up in 2hrs, wide awake, thinking about what's next :-)

Back home, I secretly arranged a disposable cup to be hidden in the bathroom, along with the pregnancy test sticks. 3:30am and I had to pee. I used the cup and the stick, and it was positive :-) I was so excited!! I didn't want to wake Amit up at that time. I finally fell asleep at 4:30am.

On the morning of 25th Nov, I woke up early, did my knee PT exercises, then told Amit I wanted to go shopping for myself at Valley Fair Mall. I never never never go shopping alone, always insist on Amit accompanying me. He was surprised and at the same time thankful that I had finally "grown up" :-) I went to Macy's and bought this cute set of newborn baby clothes. I packed the set in a box & came home. After lunch, I gave it to him. A little surprised, Amit wondered "for me?!" ... I was like .. umm, sort of... open it! As he opened it, I told him "I'm pregnant".

A different mood took over completely. Amit was very excited and happy to hear the news. He confessed he too had his doubts because of my missed period. He also confessed a little later that ever since he moved into the new house, he wanted family :-) These guys are so weird. Here I was, forever eager to hear this thought from him, and here he was, just wouldn't share it with me! We were totally surprised as this was our "first attempt" in the "fertile zone" and we got pregnant :-)

The rest is history... Doctor visits were next. We also had to share the news with close family... We're planning on doing that this week.
